Expert Emergency and Urgent Care

Upstate Emergency Medicine

All hospitals are experiencing high numbers of patients in the emergency departments, including Upstate.

Patients are seen in order of how life threatening is their condition. Anyone experiencing such emergencies as trauma, stroke, STEMI (severe heart attack) will be seen immediately.

For less severe or non-emergency care there is an average wait time of four hours but could be much longer during peak times.

All are welcome and we want to guide you to the best experience for your needs.

If you are experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency call 911.
If you are not certain you are experiencing a medical emergency, we are available to assess you in one of our three emergency departments, 24/7.

Adult Services

Adult ED (Downtown Campus)

The Emergency Department at Upstate University Hospital’s downtown campus sees more than 67,000 patients per year. As the region's only level-one trauma center, the facility offers state-of-the-art technology to care for critically ill or injured patients. Upstate handles all types of medical emergencies and cares for patients transported by ground or air from throughout the Central New York region.

Specialty Services:

Adult ED (Community Campus)

Upstate acquired the former Community General Hospital, just 3.5 miles from its downtown campus. Now referred to as Upstate University Hospital's Community Campus, its Emergency Department complements the downtown services in a quieter setting. Any patient brought to the Community Campus who requires services from Downtown will be moved seamlessly though our system. Patients who require hospitalization are admitted to either Downtown or the Community Campus based on their medical needs.

Pediatric Services

Pediatric ED (Downtown Campus)

Opened in August 2016, the new Pediatric Emergency Department doubled the size of the former Pediatric ED and relocated it to the hospital's fourth floor, making it separate from the adult emergency department. It now features 18 private exam rooms with a capacity to serve 24 patients. The Pediatric Emergency Department sees about 27,000 visits annually. The renovated space also has its own pediatric-friendly diagnostic radiology unit, meaning children do not have to leave the unit for some diagnostic tests. The space has been designed and furnished with kids in mind with plenty of gaming systems for all ages. It's decorated with whimsical designs and generous splashes of color, all aimed at lessening the anxiety for young patients.

Golisano After Hours Care (Pediatric Urgent Care, Community Campus)

There are times when minor injuries or illnesses need attention and your own doctor isn't available - and your child's problem doesn't require an emergency room visit. For those times, there's Upstate Golisano After Hours Care, the region's only pediatric urgent care center.

Designed especially for children from birth through age 21, we can help your child start feeling better - faster. Our friendly and experienced staff will make your child's visit with us as pain-free as possible. Upstate pediatricians and pediatric emergency medicine physicians will care for your child in an environment that reflects the Upstate Golisano standard for excellence. We even provide on-site laboratory and x-ray services, IV rehydration, laceration repair, orthopedic management, and a 24 hour supply of any prescriptions if needed.
